What is DirectX?

DirectX is a collection of applications which includes components like DirectDraw, Direct3D, DirectMusic, DirectPlay etc. DirectX is used to enhance multimedia performance, which includes audio and video features on a Windows system. All the audio and video cards should be DirectX compliant to play games designed for Windows. It comes bundled with all versions of Windows, and DirectX 10 is a version which was released with Windows Vista.

Knowing the version of DirectX on a Windows system

Windows provides a tool call DxDiag.exe which helps in finding out the version of DirectX on a system. To run this tool, follow these steps:

Click on Start

Click on Run

Type Dxdiag and Click on OK

This will display the version of DirectX on the system.

How to uninstall DirectX 10

The trend of this application is that with every new release of OS, Microsoft releases a newer version of DirectX. DirectX 10 is purely designed for Windows Vista and its updated versions. It can also be installed on its predecessor Windows XP, which has DirectX 9 by default. To uninstall DirectX 10, you can follow these methods –

Uninstall from the Control Panel

Use the Windows Installer Cleanup and Registry Editor

Third Party software

Uninstall from the Control Panel – Windows provides a tool in its control panel called Add/Remove Programs in XP or Programs and Features in Vista / Win 7. This tool keeps the list of programs installed on the system. This method will work only when a newer version of DirectX is installed on the system, else you will not find the default version of DirectX listed in the programs.

To uninstall DirectX 10, follow these steps –

Close All programs

Click on Start and then click on Control Panel

Click on Add or Remove Programs or Program and Features

Select DirectX 10 from the program list and choose Change/Remove or uninstall

Click Yes on the dialogue box which says Are you sure you want to remove DirectX 10 from your computer?

This will remove DirectX 10 from the system.

Using the Windows Installer Cleanup and Registry Editor – You can download and install the Windows installer cleanup utility from the Microsoft website. It deletes all the registry keys related to the software chosen for uninstallation. Again, this is applicable only if DirectX 10 is installed on a system. Follow these steps to uninstall –

Close all programs

Click on Start and click on All programs

Click on Windows Install Clean up

From the window choose DirectX 10

Click on the Remove button

After this, close the Windows Installer Cleanup, and then –

Click on Start and then Run

Type Regedit and Press Enter

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX

Delete all the keys related to DirectX 10 and then delete the Directx folder

Close Regedit

Restart the system

This will remove the DirectX version installed on the system. Once the system restarts, it will install the default version of DirectX, which can also be downloaded from the Microsoft website.

Third Party Software – You can use Perfect Uninstaller to completely uninstall DirectX 10 from the system. You can also use RegGenie to remove all registry keys related to DirectX 10.

DirectX is a next-gen graphics technology which enhances the multimedia experience of games. This application involves various modules of audio and video like DirectMusic, DirectPlay, DirectDraw, Direct3D, etc. It is used as a standard by graphic card and game design companies to design their cards and games.

DirectX is present on all versions of Windows by default, and DirectX 11 is part of the Windows 7 OS. With every new release of Windows, Microsoft releases the newest version of DirectX.

Registry Editor and Windows Installer Cleanup – Windows Installer Cleanup Utility is a tool provided by Microsoft to remove registry entries of installed programs. You can download and install it from the Microsoft website. This cleanup utility helps when DirectX is installed on a system and doesn’t remove the default version. Follow these steps to remove DirectX –

Close all running programs

Click on Start and then click on All programs

Click on Windows Install Clean up

From the list, choose DirectX 11

Click on the Remove button

Close the Windows Installer Cleanup

Click on Start and then Run

Type Regedit and Click OK

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX

Delete keys related to DirectX 11 and then delete the Directx folder

Close Regedit

Restart the system

This will remove the DirectX 11 software installed on the system. After the system restarts, it will install the default version of DirectX automatically. If any of the components are missing, you can download and install them from the Windows website.

What is DivX?

DivX is a video codec designed by DivX Inc., which gained popularity because of its ability to compress video segments into smaller chunks while maintaining the original quality. DivX has two major codec components: one is the MPEG-4 Part-2 codec, and the second one is the DivX HD codec.

DivX not only installs itself in the video codec of the system, but also installs its components in the browser too. This enhances the ability of a browser to watch online videos, so uninstalling it from the system can affect your system’s ability to play online videos.

How to uninstall DivX

DivX 11 is a package which installs itself into various locations of the video driver files. As it does not install itself in the core of the system, you can uninstall it using these methods –

Windows Uninstaller from the Control Panel

Windows Installer Cleanup and System Restore

What is DriverCure?

DriverCure is software that helps keep device drivers up to date. When installed, this software checks all the device drivers on your PC and gets updates from relevant sites. You can adjust the settings in order for the software to send emails for the required updates, thus eliminating any hassle pertaining to driver updates.

How to uninstall DriverCure

DriverCure installs itself into the core of the OS, so it is not very easy to uninstall all the files from the system. You can employ these methods to uninstall this software –

System Restore and Windows Uninstaller

Windows Installer Cleanup and Manual Removal

Third Party Removal Software

System Restore and Windows Uninstaller– Windows has a feature called System Restore which keeps a snapshot of the registry. Once this feature is run, it provides a list of dates with registry backups, and once a date is chosen, the registry of that date is applied and overwritten over the current registry. In this way, all registry entries related to DriverCure are removed. To run this feature, use these steps –

Go to All programs

Browse to Accessories and click on System tools

Click on the System restore option and choose a date prior to the installation of DriverCure

Click Next after selecting the date

Once the settings are applied, it will restart the system; after this, run Windows Uninstaller. Windows has an uninstaller in all versions of its OS, which can be used to remove installed programs from the system. Follow these steps to remove DriverCure using the uninstaller –

Close All programs

Go to Control Panel

Click on Add or Remove Programs in Win XP or Program and Features in Win Vista

Select DriverCure from the list and choose Change/Remove or uninstall and click Yes

Restart the system

This will remove all folders and files related to DriverCure software from the system.

Windows Installer Cleanup and Manual Removal– You can download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup from the Microsoft website. Once installed, double click on it and follow these steps –

From the list of installed programs, choose DriverCure

Click on the Remove button

Close Windows Installer Cleanup

This will remove most of the registry entries related to DriverCure from the system. Now we have to manually remove some of the files and registry entries from the system. Use these steps to achieve this –

Browse to the following folders and delete the DriverCure folder:

C:\Program Files\Paretologic\DriverCure
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\ParetoLogic\DriverCure

Close all the windows and then Click on Start and then Run

Type regedit and click on OK

Browse to these registry key and delete all the entries under DriverCure: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\paretologic\drivercure

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\paretologic\paretologic uus2\preset\drivercure

Browse to these keys and delete them -

From the list, choose Firefox 4

Close the Windows Installer Cleanup application

This will remove most of the registry entries related to Firefox from the system. After this, you can remove the rest of the entries by using System Restore. System Restore keeps a snapshot of the registry on a regular basis. It provides a list of dates with the backup data, and once a date is chosen, the registry settings of that date are applied.

In this way, the registry entries of the programs installed after the chosen date will be automatically removed. To run this feature, use these steps –

Click on Start and go to All programs

Browse to Accessories and then System tools

Click on the System Restore option

Choose a date prior to the installation of Firefox 4

Google’s Chrome browser does not have Google toolbar designed for it, and it just provides a series of functions which has a similar functionality like the Google toolbar.

Other Software – Plug-ins or extensions can sometimes be dangerous, as lot of malware target popular extensions like Google toolbar to infect a system. The malware enters the OS and download viruses to steal vital information from the system.

To counter this, you can download and install the StopZilla application. StopZilla is a powerful antispyware which can be employed to remove viruses and malware from a system. It not only removes the existing infections, but also helps shield the system from future infections.
