How to Uninstall HP Printer

In this article, we will discuss the various methods you can use to uninstall an HP Printer in Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.

Method 1 – Uninstall the printer software using the program menu

When you install the printer driver, HP also installs an uninstall utility that you can use to remove the printer software.

  1. Disconnect the USB cable that connects the HP printer to your computer.
  2. Click the Start button (if you use Windows XP) or the Windows logo (if you use Windows 7 or Vista) on the Windows taskbar.
  3. Click All Programs.
  4. Click HP and/or Hewlett-Packard.
  5. Click the folder pertaining to your product. In case your product is not listed, use any of the two uninstallation methods discussed below.
  6. Click Uninstall Software.
  7. Click No if asked whether you want to remove the shared files. If you remove the shared files, then the other installed HP programs may not work correctly.
  8. Restart Windows after the uninstallation is complete.

Method 2 – Uninstall the printer software using the Add or Remove Programs utility

Windows computers come with a built-in uninstaller called Add or Remove Programs which you can use to remove unwanted software from your computer.

Windows XP

  1. Disconnect the USB cable that connects the HP printer to your computer.
  2. Click the Start button.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click Control Panel.
  5. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  6. Locate and select your HP printer in the Currently installed programs list.
  7. Click Remove.
  8. Click No if asked whether you want to remove the shared files. If you remove the shared files, then other installed HP programs may not work correctly.
  9. Restart Windows after the uninstallation process is complete.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista

  1. Disconnect the USB cable that attaches HP printer to your computer.
  2. Click the Windows logo on the Windows taskbar.
  3. Click Control Panel.
  4. Click Programs and Features.
  5. Locate and select your HP printer in the Currently installed programs list.
  6. Click Uninstall.
  7. Click Yes if a User Account Control dialog box appears.
  8. Click No if asked whether you want to remove the shared files. If you remove the shared files then other installed HP programs may not work correctly.
  9. Restart Windows after the removal process is complete.

Method 3 – Uninstall the printer software using the HP product CD

You can use the HP product CD to either uninstall all HP products installed on your Windows computer or specific HP software.

Uninstall all HP products

  1. Insert the HP product CD in your CD-ROM.
  2. On the Welcome Back screen click Uninstall.
  3. Click Uninstall all HP products associated with this device.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. On the Cleanup Complete screen, click the OK button.
  6. Click Finish.

Uninstall specific HP software

  1. Insert the HP product CD in your CD-ROM.
  2. On the Welcome Back screen click Uninstall.
  3. Click Choose which HP products to uninstall.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select which software you want to uninstall.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Click Continue.
  8. On the Cleanup Complete screen, click the OK button.
  9. Click Finish.
